Tommy,

Over the years it has always been a rumor around Wisconsin that former governor Tommy Thompson wants to run for president. Apparently he is going to start the ball rolling by starting a PAC. This kind of makes sense since the republicans don't seem to have a front runner since George Allen put his foot in his mouth for the last couple of months making his unelectable as president and suddenly finding himself in a much closer senate race than was expected and McCain who the base of the party hates, so there is a lot of room for a guy to come in.

However starting a PAC now is so late. Even the lesser candidacy have millions in their coffers by now. He is joining a game half way through. Also from the article;
a Thompson spokesperson said that the PAC money will be used to support candidates who support Thompson's issues.
This is what politicians do with PAC's. They donate to similar minded or at least similar partied candidates around the country to build up support for a potential bid at the White House. The elections are next month, he has no money (as of today he hasn't even officially started the PAC). How is he going to raise money and give it to candidates to use for a campaign that will be over in less than a month.

This whole thing seems weird and a bit stupid to me. He seems behind on his political timing. This summer he was considering running for governor again just after Green freed up his primary, potentially royally screwing Green.

It won't be used for candidates in this election cycle, genius.

That is why it is stupid. Next election cycle is when he is planning on running for president (I would assume) I don't think he will be donating to other candidates while he is trying to finance a presidential run.
